Rinat Akhmetov: Business Transformation for Victory

Ukraine 07.03.2025 – Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Rinat Akhmetov has contributed over UAH 9 billion to support Ukraine. His company, Metinvest, has restructured its production to serve military needs, including manufacturing protective structures for the front lines. One of its most significant innovations is the so-called “lancet catchers” – specialized shelters designed to protect military equipment from enemy drones. These 10-by-5-metre, one-tonne structures feature a steel frame and camouflage netting. To date, the army has received 32 of these units, which have already proven effective in combat.

Metinvest engineers collaborate closely with military specialists, continuously refining the design of protective structures. Each shelter undergoes real-world battlefield testing, allowing for rapid improvements. This close cooperation ensures the most effective protection for valuable military equipment.

Supporting people and the nation

Despite losing a substantial portion of his fortune following Russia’s 2014 invasion, Rinat Akhmetov remains in Ukraine, personally overseeing his companies’ operations. Through SCM’s extensive international network, he keeps global partners informed about Ukraine’s situation and helps mobilise additional support. The company also works to maintain export routes and explore new markets – an essential effort to sustain Ukraine’s economy. More details: https://akhmetovfoundation.org/en.

Even as asset values have more than halved, Rinat Akhmetov’s companies continue paying salaries to employees. His charity foundation provides water, food, and medicine to those in need, with a special focus on frontline regions where humanitarian conditions are most dire. The foundation has also developed a rapid-response system to deliver aid to areas on the brink of humanitarian disaster.

Additionally, Metinvest has begun producing decoy military equipment. More than 250 imitations of radar stations and artillery systems help shield Ukrainian positions by drawing enemy fire away from real targets.

Akhmetov’s stance is unwavering: Ukraine must regain full control over its internationally recognised territories, including Crimea and Donbas. His enterprises remain committed to strengthening the nation’s defence capabilities, adapting production to frontline needs, and addressing the humanitarian challenges faced by civilians.
